The Best Homemade DIY Electrolyte Drink Recipe To Help You Stay Naturally Hydrated This Summer

DIY Electrolyte Drink: Stay Naturally Hydrated This Summer

As the weather heats up, so does your body’s need for proper hydration. Between longer days, sweaty workouts, and weekend adventures in the sun, it’s easy to lose more fluids and minerals than you think.

When you sweat, you’re not just losing water, you’re losing electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and chloride that help your body stay balanced, energised, and ready to move.

Rather than reaching for a fluorescent sports drink, you can make your own natural electrolyte mix at home using clean, food-grade ingredients, simple, effective, and perfectly suited for Australian summers. And best of all we stock some of the ingredients at Orku!

Why Electrolytes Matter

Electrolytes are minerals that help regulate:

  • Hydration – balancing fluids inside and outside your cells
  • Muscle function – preventing cramps and fatigue
  • Nerve signals – supporting focus and performance
  • pH balance – keeping your body in its optimal zone

When you’re low on electrolytes, you might feel tired, light-headed, or crampy. A balanced drink can restore that equilibrium fast, especially during hot, humid days.

The DIY Electrolyte Recipe

This simple formula makes 1 litre of homemade electrolyte drink that is ideal for before, during, or after exercise, or anytime you’re feeling the summer heat.
You’ll Need:

  • 1 L filtered or mineral water
  • ¼ tsp Orku Himalayan Salt (rich in sodium and trace minerals)
  • ⅛ tsp Orku Potassium Chloride (for potassium helps muscles recover)
  • 2 tbsp honey or sugar (optional but improves absorption)
  • ½ cup lemon or orange juice (adds flavour and natural potassium)
  • ¼ tsp Orku Sodium Bicarbonate (baking soda helps neutralise acidity and supports endurance)

How to Make It:

  1. Mix all ingredients in a jug or bottle.
  2. Stir or shake until the salt and sugar dissolve completely.
  3. Chill before drinking for best taste.

You can tweak it to your liking, try coconut water for extra potassium, or toss in cucumber, mint, or fresh berries for a summery twist

What Each Ingredient does

  • Himalayan Salt
 - Replenishes sodium lost through sweat and provides a range of trace minerals that help maintain fluid balance and prevent dehydration.
  • Potassium Chloride
 - Supports muscle recovery and helps maintain proper hydration levels by balancing electrolytes inside and outside your cells.
  • Sodium Bicarbonate
 - Acts as a natural buffer to help neutralise lactic acid, reducing muscle fatigue and improving endurance during physical activity.
  • Honey or Sugar
 - Provides a quick source of glucose, which helps your body absorb electrolytes more effectively and restores energy after exertion.
  • Citrus Juice -
Adds a natural boost of potassium and vitamin C while giving your drink a refreshing, tangy flavour.
